Thinking About....Pacifiers

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of pacifiers,  along with firm bedding and no blankets, in order to help protect babies against SIDS (WebMD and Science Daily).    Breast feeding advocates,  however,  warn that pacifier use might disrupt breast feeding.

Given this,  the AAP recommends that pacifiers be used in the following manner:
  • The pacifier should be used when putting the baby to sleep, but should not be reinserted once the baby falls asleep. If the baby refuses the pacifier, he or she should not be forced to take it.
  • Pacifiers should not be coated in anything sweet.
  • Pacifiers should be cleaned often and replaced regularly.
  • For breastfed babies, delay pacifier use until 1 month of age to ensure breastfeeding is firmly established.

  1. I'm glad you are thinking out your birth plan on your blog. I am beginning to work on mine and you have brought up many things I have thought about but have slipped my mind recently.

  2. We plan to use pacis too, but we are definitely waiting the month to establish breastfeeding. I don't want to make it any harder then it's already going to be.
